“Through all the changing scenes of life,
In trouble and in joy,
The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ”
Try and find a copy of this hymn to enjoy all the words – and I am sure many of you know the tune as well to hum in your head. (It was written following the theme of Psalm 34).
And we have had such changes in the last few months. We would never have imagined all the shutdown we have experienced, and then this gradual easing – which can be very confusing and the prospect that things will not be able to return to life as we knew it, if ever, is very disconcerting. I guess it was like that after the last war.
But it always has been so when we look through history, look through the Bible at the changes different generations had to cope with invasions, exile, return, rebuilding to a different world.
As Autumn approaches – and the days get shorter the feel of the air in the morning is different, some of the flowers past their best, we can know the wonderful promise of God –
As long as the earth endures,
Seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
winter and summer,
day and night
Will never cease.
So, let’s continue to praise God through all the changes. He is in charge of everything, he loves us and wants the best for us.
The hymn goes on
“Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then
Have nothing else to fear;
Make you His service your delight,
Your wants shall be His care.”
